Beware the Grinch! Holiday Security Tips for your Home
● Be extra-cautious about locking doors and windows
● Keep gifts hidden from view through outside windows.
● After opening gifts, break down and bag up boxes from expensive gifts or fancy stores.
● Burglars look for occupancy cues like outdoor lights burning 24 hours a day, piled up
newspapers, mail or advertising flyers handing on the door knob.
● Use a light timer when you’re away and discontinue your mail and newspaper or ask a
neighbor to pick them up.
● Turn on lights and a radio or television so the house appears occupied if you’re not home.
● Don’t hide spare keys in your yard or above door ledges, give them to a trusted neighbor.
● Don’t run lights or extension cords through a window that prevents it from being secured.
● Don’t post your family name on your mailbox or on your house. A burglar can call
Directory Assistance to get your telephone number and call you home while in front of your
house to confirm that you’re away.
● Don’t leave descriptive voicemails or post social media messages about your absence or
vacation plans. Bad guys love to hear that they have plenty of time to break into your home.

Be Careful on the Roads!
The holiday season is a dangerous time
for driving on the Delta, and with all the
recent highway improvements, markers
are hard to see in the fog and darkness.
Beware of drunk and buzzed drivers this
holiday, and if you think you’ve
overindulged, please call a friend or
neighbor to drive you home.

The Power of Thanks This Holiday Season
At the Emmons lab at UC Davis, leading researcher Robert Emmons has measured benefits
of practicing gratitude in children, young adults and adults. Studies show that those who
express and experience gratitude are happier, healthier, more energetic and perform better at
work. Read more about gratitude here and here. (Thanks!)
